Principal Engineer – Product Safety

About the role
Fortescue Zero is seeking a Principal Engineer to lead product safety within its rapidly expanding Decarbonisation & Heavy Industry Business Unit. You will ensure safety is embedded in the design and development of cutting‑edge zero‑emission power systems.
Key responsibilities
- Lead an engineering team to conduct safety analyses and provide technical sign‑off for components and systems.
- Coach and mentor safety team members, driving best practices and skill development.
- Act as the subject‑matter expert and primary technical advisor for product safety.
- Support R&D technology development, collaborating with academic institutions and suppliers.
- Identify and secure capacity and capability to meet engineering demand, including recruitment and outsourcing.
- Allocate engineering resources across project teams and oversee career development frameworks.
- Develop processes, systems, and ways of working for the safety team.
- Assist business units with client meetings, feasibility studies, tenders, and costing support.
Required profile
- Engineering qualification (HND, Bachelor’s, Master’s, or equivalent apprenticeship) in a STEM discipline.
- Extensive experience in functional or system safety, preferably in heavy‑industry or green‑technology environments.
- Proven ability to lead and develop high‑performing engineering teams.
- Strong communication skills for stakeholder engagement and mentorship.
