Senior IBM i Developer

About the role

Plan A Technologies is looking for a Senior IBM i Developer to lead the design, development, and modernization of mission‑critical business applications on the IBM i platform. The role focuses on converting legacy RPG code to modern free‑form ILE, optimizing DB2 for i databases, and building API‑based integrations with cloud and AI services. This position is fully remote.

Key responsibilities

• Convert legacy RPC/Fixed‑format RPG code to 100% free‑form RPG and modular ILE procedures.
• Design and optimize DB2 for i databases using DDL/SQL, and write high‑performance stored procedures and functions.
• Develop and maintain RESTful web services (using IWS or third‑party tools) to integrate IBM i with modern front‑ends such as React or Angular.
• Translate complex business requirements into technical specifications for ERP modules (Finance, Inventory, Order Management).
• Utilize IBM i performance tools and SQL plan cache to identify and resolve system bottlenecks.
• Debug batch processing and interactive job issues using STRDBG and SQL performance monitors.

Required profile

• Minimum 7 years of IBM i (AS/400) software development experience.
• Proven experience in at least one major system modernization project.
• Ability to understand and refactor complex “spaghetti” code into clean, reusable service programs.
• Strong verbal and written English communication skills.
• Experience working in a traditional green‑screen environment while adopting DevOps and Agile practices.
