Sales & Occupancy Tax Analyst

About the role

Howard Financial is seeking a detail‑oriented Sales & Occupancy Tax Analyst to own tax compliance for its hospitality and short‑term rental clients. You will translate reservation‑level data into accurate tax filings while ensuring clients meet multi‑jurisdictional obligations.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare, verify, and file sales, occupancy and lodging tax returns across multiple jurisdictions on schedule.
• Calculate tax liabilities from reservation data, including accommodation fares, cleaning fees and other taxable items.
• Reconcile transaction data between Property Management Systems, tax software reports and internal financial records.
• Maintain compliance calendars and ensure timely remittances to avoid penalties.
• Serve as primary contact for state and local tax authorities, handling notices, audits and inquiries.
• Produce structured tax reports for internal leadership and client use.
• Advise clients on aligning their operational setup with specific tax requirements.

Required profile

• Minimum 3 years of hands‑on experience in hospitality, lodging or short‑term‑rental tax compliance.
• Deep knowledge of short‑term‑rental and property‑management tax structures.
• Proven ability to work under recurring monthly deadlines with high accuracy.
• Strong communication skills for interacting with tax authorities and clients.

Required skills

• Experience with Property Management Systems such as Streamline or Guesty.
• Familiarity with tax automation tools like Avalara MyLodgeTax.
• Working knowledge of ERP platforms, especially NetSuite.
• Advanced Excel for data reconciliation and analysis.
