Senior Backend Engineer

About the role

Toptal is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to join its Core Team and help build an AI‑powered platform. The role is fully remote and focuses on developing and maintaining internal products using Ruby on Rails and related technologies.

Key responsibilities

• Write elegant, efficient, and testable Ruby and/or TypeScript code.
• Cover code with automated tests and perform manual testing.
• Review colleagues’ work and mentor team members.
• Collaborate with Infrastructure Engineers on the project’s infrastructure.
• Continuously improve team processes, communicate status, and brainstorm ideas.
• Design, develop, document, and modify cloud‑based systems.

Required profile

• 5+ years of web development experience with Ruby/Rails.
• 5+ years of experience with SQL databases.
• Strong understanding of object‑oriented programming and automated testing.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
• Ability to tackle complex problems, consider multiple quality dimensions, and thrive in a fast‑paced environment.
