Senior Backend Engineer – AI Agents

About the role

Toptal is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to lead the development of its Agentic AI tooling platform. You will own the API server and backend services while collaborating across the full stack to deliver autonomous AI‑powered development sessions.

Key responsibilities

• Define problems, specify requirements, and drive features from concept to production.
• Design and implement robust, asynchronous APIs, authentication mechanisms, and service architectures.
• Make decisions balancing user impact, performance, security, and maintainability.
• Implement quality gates, monitor product health, and improve agentic‑driven workflows.
• Lead initiatives, own sub‑products, and mentor teammates.
• Assist platform users, troubleshoot bugs, and proactively identify improvement opportunities.

Required profile

• Proven senior‑level experience in backend engineering and technical leadership.
• Strong problem‑solving mindset with ability to work autonomously in a remote environment.
• Excellent communication in English; no visa sponsorship provided.

Required skills

• Rust programming language.
• Experience with async web frameworks and API design.
• Authentication and database design.
• Service‑oriented architecture.
• React (v19) and TypeScript for occasional frontend work.
• Kubernetes, Helm, and Google Cloud Platform.
